The ever-increasing technology inside the brain of the cars has supposedly resulted in more and more expensive offerings in recent years. For instance, if a consumer were to spend Rs. 10 lakhs on a mid-size SUV a few years ago, now he/she would have to consider buying a smaller sub-4m compact SUV for the same price. And this trend carries over to each and every segment.
It’s no secret that cars have become very expensive over the years. After all, even the entry-level models you’ll see in this list are very well equipped – case in point, almost all the cars are equipped with a touchscreen with support for Apple Carplay/ Android Auto, which is a necessity in 2020 –taking away from the bare-bones feel, which we’d expect from entry-level models.
So, below you’ll find a list of the most affordable 5-Seater cars in the Indian market starting with the least expensive. Read on.
1. Datsun redi-GO
The Datsun redi-GO is the least expensive car, and also the most affordable hatchback, in the Indian market. Given the opportunity to make it compliant with the BS-VI emission standards, Datsun thoroughly updated its five-seater hatchback by giving it a mid-cycle update. With the update, then, Datsun cars improved the overall styling of the redi-GO, which now comes with a revamped striking front-end, a massive grille, new wheel covers, and a slightly updated tail section. There are also some minor changes inside the cabin. It starts at Rs. 2.83 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base D trim.
2. Maruti Suzuki Alto
Gone are the days when the Maruti Suzuki Alto used to be the only strong contender in this space. With the entry of the relatively affordable Datsun redi-GO and slightly tougher Renault Kwid in this space, the Alto has faced some serious competition over the years. Regardless, it still is one of the mostselling models in the Indian market. It comes powered by a 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine, which is good for 48bhp and 69Nm of torque. It was recently updated with a new VXi+ trim, which gets the maker’s Smartplay infotainment system with support for Apple Carplay/ Android Auto. It is priced from Rs. 3.00 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base STD trim.
3. Renault Kwid
Ever since it made its entry into the Indian market, the Renault Kwid not only just shook up the segment, it also partly established the Renault name in the Indian market. The car you see here was updated in late-2019 with a facelift, which resulted in a very muscular SUV-inspired styling. The split headlamp treatment you see in the Kwid was earlier only limited to bigger SUVs. The Renault Kwid range starts at Rs. 3.08 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base STD trim. The Renault Kwid comes with the option of either a 799cc three-cylinder petrol engine (53bhp and 72Nm) or a slightly peppier – and also our pick of the range – 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit, which makes 67bhp and 91Nm and also gets the option of an AMT gearbox apart from the standard 5-speed manual.
4. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso
Maruti Suzuki launched the S-Presso to take on the likes of the Renault Kwid, which, as mentioned above, shook the segment when it made its debut in the Indian market. Therefore, Maruti Suzuki cars gave the S-Presso some SUV-inspired styling and called it a ‘mini-SUV’. Even though the styling isn’t the strongest suit of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, it’s 1.0-litre K-Series engine is a gem and it alone makes the S-Presso all the more an interesting model. It also packs in the most interior space in this segment. The S-Presso range starts at Rs. 3.71 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base Std trim.
5. Maruti Suzuki Eeco
Out of five, Maruti Suzuki has three models in the most affordable 5-Seaters list. This explains the dominance of the homegrown carmaker in the Indian market. Unlike the others in this list, the Eeco is a utilitarian product, and hence, focusses more on practicality rather than features or styling. At Rs. 3.82 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Maruti Suzuki Eeco is the most affordable 7-Seater MPV in the Indian market. It comes powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which makes 73bhp and 101Nm of torque. The ARAI fuel efficiency figures are 15.1 km/l for petrol and about 20 km/l for CNG.
